From the day when test tube babies first became known in the 1980s, it has become a subject of hope and abuse. Contrary to other medical procedures that require high technology it has never lost its appeal. Actually its appeal has increased with media coverage and commercial concerns. As a result of the social, psychological pressures coupled with expectations from the family members, couples who could not have children have seen test tube baby treatments as a saviour and thus treatments with no certain ethical boundaries have become widespread among medical circles. The following are headlines taken from the media in this regard:
-there will be no
couples without children!
-end to infertility with test tube babies!
-after test tube babies now genetic babies!
-famous doctor glues embryos to the uterus using laser techonology!
-famous doctor reveals the miracle formula!

your money!
Why then did centers and famous doctors corrupt assisted reproduction treatments
in such a way as never seen in other medical procedures? The answer to this
question is not very simple.
1. Assisted reproduction treatment is actually a ground breaking method in the
treatment of infertility. Especially with the application of microinjection
after 1992, the problem of male factor infertility was solved and thus a light
at the end of the tunnel for couples who could not get pregnant appreared.
However, it should be stressed that still many couples will not be able to have
their own biological and genetic babies. Although success rate of test tube baby
applications among selected couples and young women is above 50%, live birth per
application is around 35-40%. With repeated trials 80% of the couples who start
the treatment get pregnant but the remaining 20% are still unsuccessful.
2. Until mid 80s the technology and skills associated with assisted reproduction
treatment was in the monopoly of a limited few but then there was an explosion
in the number of centers offering this treatment all around world. For example,
in the beginning of the 1990s there were such centers located even in apartment
flats in London targeting wealthy couples from third world countries. However,
England and other developed countries quickly established a central supervision
agency and very cleraly drew the ethical and medical boundaries of assisted
reproduction treatments and were thus able to overcome hope merchants which were
incorrectly informing people via advertisements and the media. As a result the
numerous centers closed down one by one leaving only the ones that were using
scientific and ethical methods.
3. In a sector
where the turnover and transfer of experts is even higher than in football,
scientific and ethical rules are based on personnal benefit, commercial gain and
fame. There is still a need for time for all the pieces to fall in their right
places.
